If you have started looking into thinning hair, you will have run into three letters very quickly. DHT is named on almost every product in the category, usually without much explanation of what it is or what "blocking" it is supposed to achieve.

Here is the mechanism, in plain terms, along with an honest account of what supplementation can and cannot contribute.

What DHT is

Dihydrotestosterone is an androgen. It is not something foreign — your body makes it from testosterone using an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase.

DHT is not a mistake or a toxin. It has real developmental roles. But in adults it is the androgen most strongly associated with pattern hair thinning, and the way it does that is more gradual than most people picture.

Follicles shrink, they don't die

DHT does not attack hair. It binds to receptors in the hair follicle and, over successive growth cycles, drives a process called miniaturisation.

Each hair on your head grows for a period, rests, sheds, and is replaced. In a follicle sensitive to DHT, each new cycle produces a slightly finer, slightly shorter hair than the last, and the growing phase gets shorter. Thick terminal hairs are gradually replaced by fine, pale ones — and eventually the follicle produces something barely visible.

This is why thinning is so easy to miss early. There is no dramatic loss. There is a slow substitution of thick hair for thin, over years.

It also explains something more useful: for a long time those follicles are still alive. Miniaturised is not the same as gone, which is why intervention earlier is meaningfully different from intervention later.

Why some people and not others

Two men can have identical DHT levels and completely different hairlines.

The variable is not usually how much DHT you produce — it is how sensitive your follicle receptors are to it, and that sensitivity is largely inherited. It is also regional, which is why pattern loss follows a pattern at all: the follicles at the temples and crown tend to be sensitive, while those around the back and sides often are not.

That regional difference is the entire basis of hair transplantation, which relocates resistant follicles to sensitive areas.

What "blocking" means

A DHT blocker aims to reduce the conversion of testosterone into DHT by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase, or to reduce DHT's activity at the receptor.

You should know clearly where the strong evidence sits. The pharmaceutical 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, finasteride and dutasteride, are the most studied interventions in this space, and minoxidil is the other well-established option. They are prescription and over-the-counter drugs respectively, they have documented effects, and they have documented side effects. If you are serious about pattern hair loss, a conversation with a doctor or dermatologist belongs on your list.

Nutritional approaches sit alongside that conversation rather than replacing it. Several botanical and nutrient ingredients have been studied for their influence on 5-alpha reductase activity and for supporting follicle and scalp health, with a body of evidence that is real but considerably smaller than the pharmaceutical literature. Anyone telling you a capsule matches finasteride is overselling.

Timelines, which is where most people give up

Hair operates on a cycle measured in months, and that sets a floor on how fast you can possibly see a change.

Nothing you take — supplement or drug — produces visible results in weeks. Three months is the earliest sensible checkpoint. Six is a fairer one. Judging any hair intervention at four weeks is like judging a training programme after one session.

Two practical consequences. Take progress photographs in consistent light from consistent angles at the start, because month-to-month change is invisible in a mirror and obvious in a photo. And expect the first sign of progress to be finer hairs appearing rather than existing hairs thickening.

Where a formula fits

Hair Revive is a DHT-blocking hair support formula built around clinically dosed hair-growth actives, formulated to support follicle health, scalp condition and normal hair growth in men and women. Every ingredient and dose is listed individually on the label rather than hidden inside a blend, so you can evaluate it against the research yourself.

It is designed to be one part of an approach that also includes talking to a professional, being consistent, and giving it real time.

The short version

DHT shrinks sensitive follicles gradually rather than killing them outright, sensitivity is mostly genetic, and the follicles remain viable for a long while — which is why acting earlier matters and why every honest timeline is measured in months.
